Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • Tilapia fillets (4 fillets, about 4–6 oz each), thawed if frozen and patted dry
  • Lemon zest (from 1 lemon)
  • Lemon juice (about 2 tablespoons, plus extra wedges for serving)
  • Olive oil (1–2 tablespoons)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (1 to 1½ teaspoons, to taste)
  • Kosher salt (¾ to 1 teaspoon, to taste)
  • Garlic powder (½ teaspoon)
  • Onion powder (½ teaspoon)
  • Smoked paprika (¼ teaspoon, optional, for color and warmth)
  • Fresh parsley or dill (2 tablespoons, chopped, for garnish)
  • Nonstick spray (or a light brush of oil for the basket)

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes. A hot basket helps prevent sticking and promotes even browning.
  2. Prep the fish: Pat the tilapia very dry with paper towels. Dry fish browns better and won’t steam in the basket.
  3. Mix the seasoning: In a small bowl, combine lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika if using. Stir into a loose paste.
  4. Coat the fillets: Brush or spoon the mixture evenly over both sides of each fillet. Use it all for maximum flavor.
  5. Oil the basket: Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket to reduce sticking.
  6. Arrange and cook: Place tilapia in a single layer. Air fry for 6–8 minutes, depending on thickness. No flipping needed unless your air fryer runs hot on one side.
  7. Check for doneness: The fish should flake easily with a fork and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). If not done, add 1–2 more minutes.
  8. Finish and serve: Sprinkle with chopped parsley or dill and add a squeeze of fresh lemon. Serve immediately.
