Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes. A hot basket helps prevent sticking and promotes even browning.
Prep the fish: Pat the tilapia very dry with paper towels. Dry fish browns better and won’t steam in the basket.
Mix the seasoning: In a small bowl, combine lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika if using.
Stir into a loose paste.
Coat the fillets: Brush or spoon the mixture evenly over both sides of each fillet. Use it all for maximum flavor.
Oil the basket: Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket to reduce sticking.
Arrange and cook: Place tilapia in a single layer. Air fry for 6–8 minutes, depending on thickness.
No flipping needed unless your air fryer runs hot on one side.
Check for doneness: The fish should flake easily with a fork and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). If not done, add 1–2 more minutes.
Finish and serve: Sprinkle with chopped parsley or dill and add a squeeze of fresh lemon. Serve immediately.
